About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (also known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu®) is a martial art developed by the Gracie family from Brazil based on the Japanese arts of jiu-jitsu and judo. Jiu-Jitsu (sometimes spelled as “Jujitsu”) had existed in Japan for centuries. Its origins are not entirely clear, although most historians believe that Oriental martial arts originated in India, and from there migrated to China, Korea and Japan.
Jiu-jitsu translates as “gentle or soft art”. The reason for this term is the jiu-jitsu’s underlying concept of using one’s strength and leverage in the most efficient way to overcome an opponent. The focus is on disabling (submitting) an opponent using technique and leverage, rather than brute strength. Utilizing this principle, a smaller person can defeat a stronger and larger opponent.
About Karel "Silver Fox" Pravec, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Beltl
19 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience (since 1993). During his training at the Renzo Gracie Academy, Karel has trained with and studied under some of the highest authorities in the art including Renzo Gracie, John Danaher, Rodrigo Gracie, Daniel Gracie, Matt and Nick Serra, Ricardo Almeida & Shawn Williams. Karel is one of Georges St. Pierre’s training partners when Georges periodically visits the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York.
Karel has studied martial arts, including Tae Kwon Do (3rd degree black belt) for 26 years.
Karel started studying martial arts in 1986 under Master Byung Sung Cha, reaching the rank of 3rd degree black belt in the World Tae Kwon Do Federation in 1995. In the early 1990′s, while studying and teaching Tae Kwon Do, Karel expanded his martial arts knowledge by attending numerous seminars, including Muy Thai, Jeet Kun Do and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, incorporating the techniques into his martial arts arsenal. Incorporating various martial arts in one’s training became known as mixed martial arts (MMA).
After attending the 1st seminar on the East Coast given by the Gracie family (Helio, Rorion, Royler, Rickson and others), Karel was convinced of the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which was further confirmed by the style’s success in the early mixed martial arts competitions. Karel started taking regular classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the New York/New Jersey area when they first became available in 1993, when Craig Kukuk, the 1st American black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu moved to East Coast. Shortly after, Renzo Gracie, one of the most successful and dynamic practitioners and teachers of the art moved from Brazil to open an academy with classes in New York and New Jersey, and Karel became one of Renzo’s original students.
Studying under Renzo Gracie and John Danaher (one of the world’s most technical instructors), Karel achieved the prestigious rank of Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt in July 2006.
Although Karel competes infrequently, he has demonstrated the success of his style (focus on submissions) by winning:
1st Place – 2006 Tenth Grapplers Quest West (Master Lightweight Division) – all matches won by submission
1st Place – 2007 NAGA World Championship (Advanced Director – Open Weight) – all matches won by submission, lightest competitor in the division
2nd Place – 2008 Grapplers Quest U.S. Nationals (Masters – Absolute) – lightest competitor in the division
3rd Place – 2008 Pan Am Championship No-Gi (Black Belt – ADULTS – Lightweight)
1st Place – 2010 European Championship (Black Belt – Absolute Division – Senior 3) and 2nd place in Lightweight division
Karel continues to compete at the highest level (World Championships - both Gi and No-Gi) in the adult divisions into his late 40's.
Karel has a Bachelor’s degree from State University of New York (Albany) and Master’s degree from Columbia University. The education and analytical skills have helped Karel continue growing both as a practitioner and teacher of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Tapped Out: Rear Naked Chokes, the Octagon, and the Last Emperor: An Odyssey in Mixed Martial Arts
The author of American Shaolin tells a hilarious and fascinating insider's account of mixed martial arts, the fastest growing sport in the country.
Since the first Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993, mixed martial arts (MMA) has punched, kicked, and wrestled its way into the public's consciousness. MMA is an often brutal sport that combines any and every unarmed fighting technique with pure grit. Today, the gross yearly profits of Ultimate Fighting Championship-the sport's premier professional league-exceed that of professional wrestling, boxing, and even the Boston Red Sox. In Tapped Out, Matthew Polly gives readers his on-the ground take of training and fighting in MMA.
At the age of thirty-six, Polly was out of shape and totally unprepared for what was ahead: a grueling journey through leading MMA training facilities in Bangkok, St. Petersburg, Rio de Janeiro, New York, and Las Vegas. After being utterly beaten down and built back up, he fought his first match against a fighter nearly fifteen years younger-and not only won, but sent his opponent to the hospital. Polly intersperses his own narrative with the history and background of fighting and interviews with top UFC stars such as GSP, Fedor Emelianenko, Randy Couture, and Gina Carano. Evocative of George Plimpton's classic Paper Lion, Polly's honest, funny, and eye-opening account of his experiences will appeal to the millions of devoted MMA fans who are as hardcore as the sport itself.
It takes a lot to step into the ring and go toe to toe with another person. After the ordeal of training, learning, and suffering Matthew Polly took to the ring for his one and only MMA fight. Watch the fight!

Hey FST,
I'm teaching BC 47 track 5 in honor of St. Pat's day (the one where you make a circle and sing Warrior's Code).
I really struggle with teaching these karaokee, fun happy tracks (which is weird because I consider myself a pretty big goofball). I always end up feeling awkward and a little kindergartenish when I try to get people to run in towards each other and do high knees etc.
Is there anyone out there in FST land that LOVES these types of tracks and…
